First Time in Japan – Itinerary Feedback

Hi everyone!
I’m planning my first trip to Japan in late spring and would love some feedback from people who’ve been or live there.

I’m traveling solo (with the exception of meeting up with a friend while in Tokyo but staying on my own there) and trying to balance structure with flexibility — not rushing, not checking off everything, and leaving space to walk and absorb places.

My interests:
• Modern Japanese city life & design
• Samurai history & feudal Japan
• Zen Buddhism, rock gardens, screen/panel paintings
• Onsen culture
• Food (sushi, everyday Japanese food, not just “fancy”)
• Jazz bars
• Light childhood nostalgia for Pokémon / Street Fighter (not a hardcore fan)

My goal isn’t to see everything, but to get a deep first impression of Japan that doesn’t feel too rushed or overwhelming. However, in planning the trip, I am realizing that there is so much to see and it won't be possible to explore everything in just a couple of weeks.

Current Itinerary:

Tokyo — 5 days (first stay)

Focus: Contemporary Japan, orientation, walking

  • Base: Yoyogi / Shibuya
  • Mostly unstructured walking
  • Neighborhoods: Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Omotesando, Aoyama
  • Light anchors: Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park, Shinjuku Gyoen

Kamakura — 1 day (day trip from Tokyo)

Focus: Samurai origins & Zen Buddhism

  • Engaku-ji
  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangū
  • Hokoku-ji (bamboo grove)
  • Great Buddha
  • Inamuragasaki Onsen

Kyoto — 5 days

Focus: Iconic Japanese aesthetics + wandering

  • Base: Nakagyō-ku
  • Key sites (not all in one day):
    • Kinkaku-ji + Ryōan-ji
    • Kennin-ji + Kiyomizu-dera
    • Nijō Castle
  • Optional: Fushimi Inari Taisha + Tōfuku-ji
  • Free mornings and evenings for walking
  • Areas: Gion, Pontochō, Nishiki Market, Shijō Street
  • Optional half-day trip: Uji

Kinosaki Onsen — 2 days

Focus: Onsen culture & relaxation

  • Stay at a traditional ryokan
  • Onsen hopping in yukata
  • Walking, bathing, no sightseeing agenda

Himeji — 1 day / 1 night

Focus: Feudal power & history

  • Morning visit: Himeji Castle + Kōko-en Garden
  • Restful afternoon
  • Optional evening trip to Kobe for dinner

Tokyo — 2 days (return stay)

Focus: Reflection & selective revisits

  • Mostly walking
  • Specific sites: Asakusa (Sensō-ji), Tsukiji Outer Market, & Ginza
  • Low-key final days before departure

Questions:

  • Does the pacing make sense for a first visit?
  • Anything here that feels redundant or unnecessary?
  • Anything you’d strongly recommend not missing given my interests?

Appreciate any thoughts, especially from people who’ve done Japan at a slower pace. Thank you!!!!
