  1. As of this morning I officially have my N1!!

I got 114/180, which is honestly slightly higher than I was expecting.

I’m considering studying vocabulary and doing it again in July to try and get the C1, but it wouldn’t be for any direct goal right now, so I’m not sure if I should or if the time would be better spent honing other skills.

In case anyone else wants to share their results, I got 33/60 Language Knowledge (Vocabulary B/Grammar A), 28/60 Reading, 53/60 Listening.

  2. I passed N1. I was pretty sure that I had failed, because I only started really studying for N1 like a month or 2 before, and I had no idea on any of the vocab and a lot of the weird grammar you never hear outside of N1.

32/60 on Vocab/Grammar, 49/60 on Reading and 58/60 on Listening.
I think I’ll probably keep studying up on the grammar/vocab though…

  3. Successfully got my credit limit increased on one card. The other (ANA) was already higher than I would ever use, but I switched to mostly using my low-limit Amazon card for the points since travel be expensive and the world is *gesticulates broadly*

  4. 1. Went to Lady Gaga’s concert last night, first time to see her live and she’s great

    2. As crazy as the prices are right now (booooo), I’m going to build a new PC this weekend

    3. First half of 2026 is looking good already, hoping to get good news about a new small project

    4. Yakitori dinner tonight with a friend visiting from overseas

  5. finally met the others in the office. they seem to be cool people. the environment is ‘international’ so I haven’t had to deal with the typical Japanese office dynamics. I’m excited to see whats next.

  6. – landed a dream summer gig

    – friend-of-a-friend who moved to Japan and almost immediately got Nova’d by their employer (reference may go over the heads of people who weren’t around in ’07) found a new job in a much better company, super stoked for them

    – finally caught a subbed screening of Kokuho and it was as good as everyone has been saying

    – played paper M:tG for the first time in decades with a borrowed Commander deck and it’s definitely scratching an itch to game with people

  7. * Two for two on concert lotteries and a work trip coming up next week with a 2-man show and a Saturday festival, 推し活タイム Let’sgo!

    * My last class of the semester was on Tuesday, so now I can just hole up at a café and grade today.

    * Back at the beginning of the year I decided to try and avoid doomscrolling and actively focus on hobbies again, and it’s paying off — my evenings are more enjoyable and I feel like I’m actually making progress or enjoying myself again.

  8. After a few retries, I finally passed the provisional driving test (the one conducted on the set course)!

Absolutely brutal level of expectation, the stress was wrecking me but once I heard the word 合格 uttered from the procter I instantly felt better.

I know I still have the final on-road test, but from what I’ve read about it, that test is easier for many people because it’s a real drive and not some curated course where you pretend to react to imaginary hazards. So hopefully it’s downhill from here!

  9. Double-dipping in this thread, but up until they left in December, I’d mostly been hanging out with the foreigners in my company. I was lonely when they left, but I’ve finally managed to get in with the Japanese people, and they’re taking me out to horumon tonight. :3

  10. Good news regarding my health.  I don’t feel like shit for the first time in ages. And appreciative of a flexible workplace.

My sister just sent me some awesome news about her band.  Their best achievement to date.

I’ve been off the Reels and shit for a week now.  I hope I never go back.

  11. I knew the Amazon Prime interface was crap; but, recently signed up for Netflix and what a joy to not have to select/scroll between each of the (sub / dub) x (season 1, 2, 3, 4, …. ) versions of shows that you want to watch.

Do they need more work wrt making caption/dubbing options viewable on the summary page? Yes; but, after years of the Amazon crapfeed, it’s a truly pleasant experience.

  12. Got a letter from the city yesterday saying that because of the increase in cost of living they’re giving us ¥40,000 because we have two kids. Not the way to fight inflation but we’ll take it

  13. I received some more administrative roles at my workplace recently and will be involved in the hiring process of our newest candidate! I felt really honored to be a part of this process!
