Road to New Beginning Results (Jan. 19th)

EffingKenta has his results posted on his page and over on r/NJPWWorld subreddit if you want to read his, but I will be covering today and possibly tomorrows show for those still here. Yet again I apologize if this isn't good as the usual result posts.

There is English commentary for today's show.

Young Lion Cup 1st Round: Masatora Yasuda def. Tatsuya Matsumoto – 8:33 / Boston Crab

  • Matsumoto enters without his new shirt, Yasuda enters with his.
  • Fairly entertaining for a Young Lion Preview.
  • Masatora Yasuda vs Shoma Kato on Jan. 20th is our first semifinal.

Young Lion Cup 1st Round: Daiki Nagai def. Zane Jay (DQ) – 7:20 / DQ (after a chair to the skull)

  • Zane enters wearing his new shirt, Nagai enters with his new towel on his head.
  • Much more aggressive then the match prior.
  • Nagai locks a Boston Crab on Jay, however Callum Newman gets on the apron to taunt Nagai, however he slides a chair to Jay.
  • Jay accepts the chair and cracks Nagai over the skull with it, and it seems like Zane will be the new Young Lion of United Empire.
  • A brief beatdown on Nagai continues until the rest of Unbound Co. run down to save him.
  • Katsuya Murashima vs Daiki Nagai on Jan. 20th is the second semifinal.

Aaron Wolf, El Desperado, Master Wato, YOH & Toru Yano def. House of Torture (Dick Togo, Douki, EVIL, Ren Narita & Yujiro Takahashi) – 8:13 / Vendevall

  • Douki and Desperado start.
  • Despe hits the ropes and gets kicked in the back by Dick, Yano does the same to Douki and they both tag out.
  • YOH and Yano do Yano's "Yano To-Ru!" chant and outsmart the House, until they don't and get beat down for it.
  • Narita has been using a heel hook on Wolf, that's something to keep an eye on for their match at New Beginning.
  • Desperado and Douki were tearing at each other's masks after the match.
  • Upcoming Matches: Aaron Wolf vs Ren Narita (Feb. 11th), El Desperado vs Douki (Jan. 20th)

United Empire (Callum Newman, Fransesco Akira, Great-O-Khan, Jake Lee & Jakob Austin Young) def. Unbound Co. (Gedo, Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi, Taiji Ishimori & Yota Tsuji) – 9:43 / Akira debuted a new suplex-esque finisher.

  • Akira enters with a new mask.
  • I just noticed this, but Jake Lee wears a green contact in his left eye.
  • Unbound do their fist bump before attacking the Empire before the bell.
  • Shingo and O-Khan are the one's who officially start as everyone else is fighting on the outside and in the bleachers.
  • Shingo looks genuinely hurt after a kitchen sink knee from Jake Lee, clutching his abdomen. He tags out to Tsuji shortly after.
  • Hiromu and Ishimori are showing their tag offense against JAY and Akira.
  • The finish sees Newman hitting Gedo with the Overkill (Finlay's finisher) and leaving Gedo for Akira to finish off.
  • If it wasn't for Shingo's possible injury, then this would've had a better taste for me.
  • Post Match: Tsuji grabs a mic and calls Lee into the ring. Tsuji asks Lee if has anything to say, but Lee chokes Tsuji with the microphone and says nothing before draping the HW title over Tsuji's face.
  • Side note: Happy Birthday to our Smart Bastard.
  • Upcoming Matches (Not Confirmed): Akira/? vs Hiromu/Ishimori, Newman vs Finlay, Tsuji vs Lee, Gabe Kidd vs Andrade

SHO def. Kosei Fujita – 6:22 / DQ (Metal Sheet to the head)

  • SHO gets on the mic before Fujita enters.
  • SHO attacks Fujita before the bell.
  • Fujita dropkicks SHO who's holding a chair and teases hitting SHO with it, but decides against it.
  • They brawl on the floor to start the match off.
  • SHO throws Murashima into the guard rail and throws him into the ring to distract the ref.
  • SHO then hits Fujita with a chair to his taped shoulder, the same one that was injured a couple years back.
  • The ref goes down, SHO hits Fujita in the Robbie's, and attempts to use the black metal sheet, but Fujita thwarts it.
  • Fujita hits SHO with the sheet, not caring about the DQ.
  • This was fine.
  • Kanemaru comes out, as does Robbie, and we move on to the next match.

Yoshinobu Kanemaru def. Robbie Eagles – 3:18 / Head scissors pin (after alcohol to the eyes)

  • Ref goes down after some clean action, Kanemaru takes a drink and sprays Eagles with it before rolling him up with a head scissors pin.
  • This wasn't overly exciting, but it was fine enough.
  • Upcoming Matches: ISB vs H.O.T (Jan. 20th)

Never 6-Man Tag Team Title Match: Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi) & Boltin Oleg def. TMDK (Hartley Jackson, Ryohei Oiwa & Zack Sabre Jr.) – TITLE CHANGE / 18:07 / GTR

  • Goto and Zack start.
  • Poor Zack gets crushed by Oiwa and Hartley.
  • Boltin hits the Boltin Shake on Hartley. It was very impressive.
  • Boltin kicks out, and Zack lands on top of the referee, inadvertently taking the ref out momentarily.
  • I really, really wanna see Goto vs Oiwa/Zack vs Boltin now.
  • Very fucking good match.
  • Post-Match: Zack and Boltin get in each other's faces, but TMDK leave without further issue.

IWGP Heavyweight Tag Contendership: Shota Umino & Yuya Uemura def. Taichi & Tomohiro Ishii – 30:38 / Second Chapter

  • Prior to the match, Oskar and Yuto-Ice join Japanese commentary.
  • Oskar will also be joining English commentary for the first time tomorrow.
  • During Yuya/Shota's entrance, Yuto is on his phone and Oskar waves them off. I laughed at that a bit, not gonna lie.
  • Ishii and Yuya start. Crowd is split 50/50 for both men.
  • Ishii's left shoulder is heavily taped.
  • Ishii gets a bloody nose.
  • This was awesome. Go watch it.
  • Post-Match: Ishii walks to the back first. Umino, Yuya and Taichi are left in the ring. Yuya, Umino and Taichi have words while Taichi sits in the corner before shaking hands and hugging it out. Taichi raises their hands before rolling out of the ring.
  • Promo: Yuya and Shota thank Ishii and Taichi for the match, and say they wanna do it again. Umino call's KOB to the ring to hear what they think. Yuto wants to see who's stronger and that he wants to get high with Umino and Yuya before they leave. Yuya asks Umino if he's frustrated with his losses, because Yuya is and Umino needs to carry it too. Umino responds that he is also frusterated, and they practically say that they've unlocked a new feeling and they will use those to win the tag titles. Umino thank's the crowd and the people watching from home for watching. Umino says a bit more, and is very fired up but I missed part of it.
  • Shota and Yuya celebrate in the ring before doing fanservice to close the show.
  • Upcoming matches: Shota/Yuya vs Knockout Brothers (Feb. 11th)
