This thread is for all the simple questions (what does that mean?) and minor posts that don't need their own thread, as well as for first-time posters who can't create new threads yet. Feel free to share anything on your mind.

    Can someone help me out with what she’s saying here? (23:29 if the timestamp doesn’t work)

    I can pick out she’s saying ゴドリックって聞いたことあるそう。こいつも結構ネットで有名ですよね but I’m not sure about that そう. I thought when you stick そう to ある it becomes ありそう, not あるそう, so is she saying that or is it something else?

    Or is she saying ぞ? I thought that was more of a masculine sentence-ender particle though, but I’m not sure how “flexible” that idea really is (like how some women use 僕 even though they teach you it’s a masculine pronoun in learner materials)

  3. At what point should I start learning to write?

    I’ve already started my journey and have already learned both Hiragana and Katakana. I’ve just started reading Genki I and so far it hasn’t gone onto writing yet. Note that I’m still very much at the beginning, and just finished the Japanese Writing System Chapter.

    Should I just follow along for now and worry about writing later?

  4. I’m trying Migii (the app) to study for JLPT but I’m starting to find weird translation and kanji usage. Is this normal? It feels really frustrating for beginners.

    For example, this sentence:

    森林の現象によって、地球の気候がしだいに変化してきた。

    When I opened the explanation for this sentence, 現象 means “phenomenon”, a strange word considering the context. It dawns on me it was probably supposed to be 減少 which means “decrease” but is a homophone to 現象. Or am I misunderstanding the context?

    The in-app dictionary also uses weird translation like them translating 変化 as “goblin, ghost, apparition, bugbear” but does not list the most common translation “change”.

    Should I continue with Migii or do I have a better alternative?

  5. What does it mean when 半濁点 is attached to some words that normally don’t have it?

    Like this: ｱｯ゜

    I’ve seen these kind of usage of 半濁点 twice now and both times they were spoken sounds iirc.
