I passed JLPT N3 from last December.
one of the ways that actually massively helped me for reading is doomscrolling for hours on japanese social media.
I got sick for large parts of last year and was very sedentary. my Instagram reels were almost entirely in japanese (niche crafting content among other topics) and I had created a twitter account to be part of the Japanese side of an anime fandom.
i spent probably a solid average 5 hours a day on these, not usually translating because Grok is garbage. i would look up words in jisho and for reels it's just trying to comprehend as much as possible.
i also read whatever random Internet articles piqued my interest to the best of my ability, along with YouTube videos on content I was interested in. for these I just tried to comprehend as much as possible from context.
previous to this I had done extensive kanji study for months, but not much else since my three semesters of japanese years ago. i studied anki n4 and n3 decks at a moderate pace during this time too.
when I sat down to study for the reading section, it was barely work at all. just learning the questions. i realized this was due to my endless doomscrolling that was passive immersion.
i just think this an comical and interesting experience, and in case anyone else is glued to their phone, perhaps just try consuming only content in japanese that you like, even if it's short form. it paid off for me massively.
