If there is a property in Japan that's owned by 3 heirs, does it ever make sense to pay off the other 2 heirs their fair amount so I can inherit the house as the sole owner? The two reasons are 1) it has sentimental value because I spent my childhood there and the other heirs aren't as attached and 2) it's located in a convenient part of tokyo.
Financially it probably doesn't make sense given the estate tax I have to pay when I inherit the house, and the estate tax my heir would have to pay when they inherit the house. The money is probably better kept in a US Brokerage Account since I have permanent residence in the US. What's your thoughts?
