I work in a small countryside office in Japan, about 10+ coworkers, mixed team. It’s open plan, no walls, sound travels everywhere.
Every morning, before the boss arrives, a few coworkers start chatting. Not small talk. Full volume, long non work related conversations. TV, family stuff, random gossip. It can go on for one to two hours. Non-stop.
The second the boss walks in, Everyone suddenly in work mode.
We’re not allowed to use headphones. So there’s no escape. And mornings are already low energy for me. I need quiet for 30 to 60 minutes to warm up, drink coffee, and get into focus. Instead, it feels like sitting inside a live radio show.
Because it’s countryside, the vibe is more close-knit and casual. People grew up together, same schools, same community. I get that. But from a productivity point of view, it’s draining. I reread the same document multiple times because I can’t think.
I also don’t want to be “the foreigner who complains about Japanese culture.” At the same time, this is every single day.
Anyone experienced this in smaller local offices?
How do you deal with constant morning noise when headphones aren’t allowed?
