I don’t know why I thought I could and I didn’t really see anything online so just in case anyone is curious….
Last month, we flew from NYC to Bangkok with a layover in Haneda that arrived around 5am. My sister lives in Japan and we were supposed to meet this Fall but it didn’t happen. So, I had a bunch if gifts and things for her, so I thought that I could enter Japan, go to Yamato transport luggage delivery and send her the gifts. We had booked a hotel in the transit area of Haneda, so I first decided to check in there, and from there I thought I would be able to enter Japan through customs and immigration.
Nope. I ended up making some immigration guys really mad (they yelled at me why I did such a dumb thing!) and then someone from the airlines had to come and escort me to the area through a secret elevator. I stupidly didn’t realize that it was going to be a big deal.
I ended up being able to do it (I’ve never profusely apologized or bowed so much) but it was not a sure thing.
So, if you’re Japanese sibling wants you to send them a package through Yamato at Haneda, turn left from the jet bridge to the “enter Japan” side first or tell them “no way!”.
Also, the line at Yamato was crazy long and the line at JAL delivery (right next to them) didn’t have anyone.
