Hi all,
I am moving to Japan soon on a working visa from Australia and have a portfolio of ETFs I am not entirely sure what to do with. I am considering moving them to an international broker and having the dividends go into my Aus bank account while in Japan.
I have been reading a few posts about this topic and from what I am aware as a non resident (for the first 5 years) unless I remit the funds to Japan I don’t have to declare the dividend. I am aware I may have to declare the shares to some extent.
I have a few questions regarding this:
– Is my assumption correct?
– If the ETFs have income partially from Japanese companies even though the ETFs are Australian does that count as Japanese sourced income?
– If the ETFs make capital gains by adjusting shares internally (sorry I forgot the term), is this Japanese sourced income while I am residing in Japan?
– Are there any other gotchas involved with this I am missing?
– Is there a recommendation of someone I can pay for a consult to get accurate information?
If someone takes the time to answer these questions I would be extremely appreciative.
