French Driver’s Licence and Basic Resident register

With a driving permit from France, I obtained the official translation. I am on the basic resident register too. My understanding is that I am allowed to drive for one year from my date of first entry, irrespective of the short stays I spent in other countries. Is that understanding correct? Is it spelled out clearly somewhere so that I can bring it to the rental agency in case of questions?

The JAF only says: Drive with a foreign license | JAF

  • The effective period of driving with this translation is one year from the date of entry into Japan. (For holders leaving and re-entering Japan, the validity is one year after reentry.) However, conditions vary for foreign residents who are registered in the Basic Resident Register leaving and re-entering Japan within three months. Please contact the Driver’s License Center with jurisdiction in your area for details.
