they literally made converting a license almost as hard as getting one from scratch, totally unjustified move motivated entirely by a desire to push foreigners even further out of society and make our lives harder.

I’d say it depends where you’re from. Signs in the US are different. As well as taking the practical exam if needed. It’s unreasonably strict with the procedure

One of the hardest things I’ve done in life educational wise was to get my driver’s licence in Japan from scratch at a Japanese driving school in Japanese.
The prac was easy.
The tests were so damn difficult because of the trick questions.

I did fail the written test 2 times but it wasn’t that hard and you can rebook a session very quickly
A few tricky question of course but nothing that annoying

The written test was never the problem. It’s the nonsensical practical test that forces you to drive in a very specific way that you would never know without having taken specific lessons from the driving school next door.
I took the 100 questions test about 16 years ago and I believe 90 question 1 point each and 5 test questions were 2 points each for a total of 100%. One of the test questions stated what I would do if I approached a paddle on the road. Not sure if this was a typo or the letter “u” that looked like the letter “a”. I told the administrator this should be corrected. I guess it went into one ear and out the other. It was never corrected as other Ex-Pats told me that the word wasn’t changed.
If you park on the bicycle lane while your partner goes shopping, it’s an automatic pass. Easy trick nobody knows.
So glad I could just swap my nz licence ten years ago when I did it.

As somebody who passed it recently, what worked for me was binging youtube mock tests and referring to Rules of the Road to clarify things I didn’t understand
I was so stressed and over studied but got 50/50 in the end
Do I REALLY need to go to driving school, though? Can’t I just make a reservation for a driving test without going to a stupid overpriced schoool?
When I got my license in Ibaraki in 2021, out of 10 foreigners in my group, I was the only one who passed.
At this point they can simple ask them to leave ( sarcasm)
I’m really glad I was able to convert my Oregon license over without having to take any tests. Saved myself a lot of money and a huge headache. My coworker on the other hand, I’m curious to see if he’ll have a harder time passing the driving test without taking the driving classes.
Becoming one of the dullest, most unadaptive drivers on the planet requires special knowledge and deep pockets!
