Any Canadians assume their spouse’s name while in Japan?

I'm going to ask this in the hopes that someone else has been in my situation.

-I'm in Japan, got married in Japan

-My Ontario ID has expired

-I have a current passport, obv

I want to assume my spouse's name, but I'm not sure how to do this from Japan. The consulate can renew my passport, but only under the same name.

If I want to get a name change based on marriage, I'm supposed to go to a Service Ontario desk with the marriage certificate and ID, which I obviously cannot do.

Has anyone changed their name from Japan? Or do I literally need to return to Canada to do it?
