New resident of Tokyo here. I’ve been seeing a lot online about how difficult they’re now making it to renew your visa so I want to make sure I am doing everything correctly so I can maximise my WHV stay (up to 18 months for me, an Aussie). I stumbled upon a bunch of information about the pension – I understand the payment of this is mandated by law, however apparently you can get an exemption if you are unemployed/a low income earner? I don’t have a job yet and am in the process of looking for one, and hopefully once I get one they will handle the pension payments (as I have read and this is similar to employers in Australia too.) Has anyone successfully applied for an exemption? Is immigration going to make my life a living hell?
