Lanterns and Ema Overlooking a Passing Train in Ueno, Tokyo

The small courtyard of Marishiten Tokudaiji Temple sits just above the street, offering a quiet vantage point over the surrounding cityscape.

At first glance, it feels tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, but a closer look closer reveals a commuter train on the Keihin-Tōhoku Line slipping past at eye level, its blue stripe and metallic body cutting through behind the scene.

Rows of glowing lanterns reveal the names of patrons, their warm light standing in gentle contrast to the cooler glow of the modern city surrounding this tiny oasis.

I am always intrigued how old and new don’t just coexist here, but they quietly overlap.
