Sleeping approach for baby without a crib

My baby is 8 months old and does not have a crib because the father (Japanese) believes it is a waste of money. I am fine with this, but sometimes I think my life would be easier if I had a crib

because it is a confined and safe space. I am wondering, for parents who went cribless, how did you put your baby to sleep that is at the age of rolling and crawling? The issue I face now is that my baby will fall asleep on her own with little intervention from me, but she sleeps on a futon, so she has open range to wherever she wants. Lately she is rolling all over the place, crawling a bit too, and will come off of the futon. I can’t let her sleep on the floor, but when i move her she gets hysterical and starts crying a lot. What do parents do in this situation? Do you go back to rocking your baby to sleep? And even then, when they wake up in the middle of the night, do you again have to rock th back to sleep? I finally got to a point where i no longer have to rock her to sleep, but now the patting and shushing does not work either. Would like to avoid rocking if possible. Thanks!
