Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike expressed displeasure in Tottori Prefecture Governor Shinji Hirai’s use of the term “auntie”


At a regular press conference on the 19th, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike was asked about Tottori Prefecture Governor Shinji Hirai's use of the term "auntie" in reference to her at the prefectural assembly on the 18th. She expressed her displeasure, saying, "It is precisely this kind of remarks that is causing women lose hope in that region (Tottori)."

According to the Tottori Prefectural Assembly Secretariat, at the prefectural assembly on the 18th, in response to a general question from a prefectural assembly member who proposed providing cash to children as a measure against the declining birthrate, Mr. Hirai responded to the effect that "Tottori Prefecture is in a difficult financial situation. In Tokyo, there is an 'aunt' who will do it right away."

Immediately after making the statement, another prefectural assembly member pointed out that his remarks were discriminatory against women, and Hirai asked his statement to be remove them from the minutes.
