Provisional 10‑Day Japan Itinerary (History by Day, Cyberpunk by Night) + Need Feedback!

Hi everyone!

I’m planning a 10‑day solo trip to Japan in May 2027, and I’d love feedback, suggestions, and reality checks.

Context:

  • First time in Asia (lots of solo Europe travel) so am comfortable with solo experiences.
  • I’m LGBTQ+ and tattooed — comfort and safety matter.
  • I must be in the Tokushima area for a lifting event on May 24–25.

My interests: deep history, temples, castles, folklore, traditional Japan during the day… and cyberpunk / neon Tokyo weirdness at night.

Here’s my preliminary itinerary. I’d love thoughts on pacing, transport choices, and anything I shouldn’t miss. I did use AI to generate this so forgive any weirdness

  • Day 1 — May 16 (Tokyo)
    • Arrive in Tokyo → settle → do a Cyberpunk Night Walk in Kabukicho (guided neon district tour). Goal: adjust to Japan but still enjoy the nighttime vibe.
  • Day 2 — May 17 (Tokyo)
    • Edo‑Tokyo history day (Asakusa, Sumida River, Fukagawa Edo Museum) → Neo Shinjuku Atsushi for dinner (cyberpunk‑themed izakaya with neon lighting + DJ vibe).
  • Day 3 — May 18 (Tokyo)
    • Day trip to Nikko for shrines + mountain history → Night photography tour through Shinjuku/Shibuya (cyberpunk night shots + a themed bar stop).
  • Day 4 — May 19 (Tokyo → Kyoto)
    • Morning/afternoon: Cyberpunk Immersion Tour (8‑hour guided dive into Tokyo’s neon/back‑alley subculture) OR the TOKYO::CYBERPUNK art exhibition in Shibuya. Evening: Shinkansen to Kyoto.
  • Day 5 — May 20 (Kyoto)
    • Classic Kyoto: Fushimi Inari → Higashiyama → Kiyomizu‑dera. Night = rest.
  • Day 6 — May 21 (Kyoto)
    • Zen day: Ginkaku‑ji, Philosopher’s Path, Nanzen‑ji (or Kinkaku‑ji/Ryoan‑ji). Keeping this day peaceful.
  • Day 7 — May 22 (Nara → Tokushima)
    • Visit Nara (Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha, Nara Park) → travel to Tokushima in the evening.
  • Day 8 — May 23 (Tokushima)
    • Arrival + explore: Awa Odori Kaikan, Mount Bizan ropeway, Castle Museum.
  • Day 9 — May 24 (Tokushima)
    • Required commitment day. Free time ideas: indigo dyeing, Naruto whirlpools, pilgrimage temples.
  • Day 10 — May 25 (Tokushima)
    • Second commitment day. Evening: head back toward Osaka/KIX or stay one more night.

Questions for the community:

  1. Is the Tokyo → Kyoto transition after an 8‑hour cyberpunk tour too much?

  2. Anyone tried the cyberpunk tours / bars I listed?

  3. Tattoo-friendly tips? Especially for Kyoto and Tokushima.

  4. Any hidden historical gems in Shikoku I can squeeze into the Tokushima days?

  5. Are ferries (Wakayama ↔ Tokushima) reliable in late May?
