Netflixs Japanese Subtitles of American shows are terrible

I know this is obvious but Netflixs Japanese subtitles of western movies and shows are really awful.

Was introducing Brooklyn99 to my partner and she barely got any jokes reading the Japanese subtitles. When I read it too realized the subtitles lose all the nuance/subtleties and meaning behind most of the jokes.

Like its not even a literal translation that makes it bad, its like some boring person who doesn’t understand english or comedy wrote the subtitles.

I learned Japanese listening to it while reading English subtitle, honestly as an N1 now I feel those words english subtitles were far more representative of japanese (in most cases) than the reverse.
