Struggling to turn home office into sleeping space – sofa bed

I am looking for recommendations for a sofa bed that can sleep two people and is comfortable. I am a foreigner and I want to add a sofa bed to my home office that would be used for visitors (still they need to sleep comfortably for about 2 week periods). I have the room for it to expand but when it couch form I prefer if it’s not over 1.80m wide, also prefer if it straight and not L-shaped but I’m really struggling to find any options that looks decent and comfortable. As my family and friends are European I don’t think they would be comfortable using a futon on the ground.

  1. Would a Japanese Shikibuton not work well? We do live in the land of futons, after all. It can be rolled up and stored away when not in use.

My MIL is currently staying at our place and sleeping in my home office at night on a futon, works perfectly and very comfortable.

  2. How about a foldable shikibuton/futon instead of an expensive sofa bed? Good proper sofa beds are usually really expensive (much more than a futon) and it’ll be difficult to get rid of if you decide to move or dispose of it.

  3. How about an decent quality air mattress? There are lots of sofa beds out there but if you can’t find anything you like, maybe explore non-sofa bed options.

  4. I’m not sure how comfortable they are but maybe check out the Koala Sofabed, they have a showroom in Tokyo if you want to test before buying.

I have one of their mattresses and it’s been quite good so far.

IIRC, they also come with trial/test period where if you decide that it’s not for you, you can return it for a full refund.

  5. Air mattress or a folding futon from Ikea or a day bed. Or just fold out futons
