Why do so many Japanese novels have explanations (解説) at the end of the book?

I personally like to come to my own conclusions but is that not as popular? Given the language is very high context, do even native speakers need help understanding the meaning of a story? Is it just something japanese people prefer/enjoy having at the end of a book?
