I have a friend from Japan whose parents divorced when they were very young. She was raised solely by her mother and had very little contact with her father. She told me that there is no “shared custody” in Japan. The father always paid child support but was never a part of the child’s life after the divorce. My question is: Is it common for the father to remove themselves from their child’s life after a divorce or was this more a case of a dead beat dad?
