is it possible to build a creative career in japan?

A bit of backstory: I’m almost 24 and currently working as an ALT. I plan to keep teaching for at least another year, and I’ve been living in Japan for about 2 years now.

Art has always been a big part of my life. I studied it in college and have a BA in general studies (my original major was game design, but I ended up switching out). Art is still one of my main focuses, though.

I work in a variety of mediums, including watercolor, pen, colored pencil, oil pastel, as well as pottery and photography. I’m starting to take it more seriously and would really like to find a way into the creative industry here in Japan, even if it’s just part-time at first. My long-term goal is to build something meaningful and actually make use of my degree.

I also have a small opportunity coming up: I’ll be exhibiting my work at a friend’s live show in a couple of weeks.

I’ve gotten really positive feedback on my style from Japanese people, and I’ve noticed that a lot of artists here have a similar aesthetic to mine, which makes me feel like it might be a good fit.

Does anyone have experience breaking into the art/creative scene in Japan, or advice on where to start?
