Hakone Ryokan with private onsen Questions for December trip

Travelling in December as family of 4 (2 teens, counted as adults). We are looking to book something now – and have some questions.

  1. private outdoor baths for winter – is this a good idea?

  2. Yama-no-chaiya, Ten Yu and Gora Kadan seem very nice properties – but around $1600-$1800 USD for one night with the Kaiseki. Do we expect these to fluctuate or only go up as they get booked out?

  3. we are planning one night – but could maybe squeeze in two. Double the cost – but does this warrant the extra night to hit home? Alternatively, I know check in says 3pm, but can we show up bags in tow and use the facilities (common onsen) sooner?

  4. Any other ryokans that we should consider as a family?
