Tokyo to Mt.Fuji Travel Help. Urgent

Hi everyone,

I’ve booked an early morning train from Tokyo to the Mt. Fuji area, and I’m planning to explore the region on my own (no group tour). I want to take things at my own pace, visit nearby spots, and not rush the experience.

Because of that, I’m not sure what time I’ll be done and ready to head back to Tokyo.

My question is: how flexible is the return journey? Are trains or buses easily available throughout the day that I can book on the spot, or is it safer to plan ahead and reserve return tickets in advance?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from those who’ve done a similar self-guided trip.

Thanks in advance!

  1. The local trains are always available for you to hop on and off, but you might need to stand the whole way depending on your luck. I took the local trains btw, transit at Otsuki station. Not too bad. Bus tickets may sell out but they are more easily available than the limited express trains.

  2. I always get a bit anxious w open return plans like this tbh part of me likes the freedom, but part of me keeps thinking what if everything’s full when I’m tired and just wanna go back lol I think japan is pretty flexible w trains but idk if that changes during busy times… are you going on a weekend? feels like that might matter more than anything..
