Where do foreigners / expats usually hang in Tokyo?

I’m Japanese and looking to meet more foreigners (especially for dating, but also just socially). Dating apps haven’t worked well for me, and I’ve tried some international bars in Shibuya but it feels hit or miss.

Where do people actually meet? Like bars, events, communities, etc. Any recommendations?

  1. If you mean westerners Just go to nakameguro or Ebisu (what nationality are you trying to look for?)

  2. We Italians, usually hang around the Bar Tafazzi and Il Clandestino. ebisu and nakameguro respectively.
Sport soccer on sat and Sun are a must at the footnik ebisu again.
The Hub is a good place to start with, however plenty of couples and despite we still feel the vibe, not really a place for grey hair men. 😎

  3. I’m on the other end (Canadian) and wanted to figure out how to meet expats and Japanese. What apps have you used?

  4. The few non-Japanese I know don’t hang out in particular places. For expatriates, try Kasai and Nishi-Kasai (large Chinese and, for the latter, Indian populations), Takenotsuka (Vietnamese), around Shin-Okubo (Korean), Kita-Senju (Philippine).

  5. I know you said the dating apps haven’t worked well for you, but have you tried Bumble? Just from personal experience, that’s how I found my Japanese partner. Many of my female international friends use Bumble too.

Other than that, you could try meetup.com and look for events in Tokyo. I saw so many “international” mixers on there that seemed to be for people looking to date.

If you can find any ALTs or eikaiwa teachers to befriend, that will also open the door for you to their community and you can meet a lot of foreigners I think.
