When I first got to Japan about 6 months ago, I registered a phone number with Rakuten mobile and used a credit card I brought with me from my home country to pay the bill every month. This worked fine for the past 5 months until for some reason it wouldn't work for last month's bill. I didn't notice until I saw an email saying I have an overdue bill from last month. I also noticed they sent an email last month telling me they could not charge my card but I did not see it (I get flooded with rakuten point promotion emails so I tend to not check any email from them) so this was a pretty stupid mistake on my part since I could've paid with the konbini pay slip they send every month if I had just checked my email.
I heard that missing payments like this can really hurt your chances of applying for credit cards or other phone service. I would love to pay the bill immediately, but they won't even accept my rakuten card for payment and they won't let me remove the old card, so I have no choice but to wait for the konbini pay slip to arrive to pay.
