Daily Thread: for simple questions, minor posts & newcomers [contains useful links!] (April 14, 2026)

This thread is for all the simple questions (what does that mean?) and minor posts that don't need their own thread, as well as for first-time posters who can't create new threads yet. Feel free to share anything on your mind.

The daily thread updates every day at 9am JST, or 0am UTC.

  1. In the context of ordering food or buying things at a store, are there any differences in nuance between saying 「これだけです」 and 「これ以上です」?

  2. this might be a stupid question bc im a beginner so sorry in advance if it’s dumb, but…

whats the point of 絶対 vs 絶対に and 本当 vs 本当に and things like that, and how do i know when to use one or the other? is it just the particle に added to the end?

if so, why do they have their own entire dictionary entires with に, would that not be as redundant as adding every other word with particles attached to them as separate entries?

  3. Hello! Was hoping a native speaker might be able to proofread a Thank You card I wrote for my Japanese professor. Please pm me if willing!

  4. I keep struggling with grammar on even simple constructions.
I take classes and I’m in my third year (4 hours a week) and I feel I’m getting nowhere.

Now I do need to combine it with my regular job so I’m not able to consistently do my exercices every day and it shows. After a grueling work day I just can’t concentrate on doing Anki or trying to concentrate on listening so I know I’m certainly in the wrong.

However, since day one I tend to struggle with grammar, I realize it’s grammar structure is both very different compared to germanic languages and at the same time the rules are usually not that complex (yet).

But then I keep struggling with simple basic structures. Since I can’t contact our professor for everything and I often want to double check sentences I made or even want to know why a sentence is structured as it is I try to use AI tools (I hate AI but for languages it seems to be an ok tool.)

So I don’t use AI to let it make sentences for me but rather I ask the AI to “explain” a sentence for me.

For instance : explain to me : かまいませんよ
So it tells me what the translation is but also what verb is being used, what the base is and I can ask why the ‘よ’ is needed at the end etc.

Now is this a good idea and what free to use AI is best for these kind of questions ?

I tried Gemini and OpenAI and both seemed OK but perhaps you can tell me which one is the most correct most of the time ?

  5. Does anyone know: for the word テープ, does it mean just tape for recording audio? Or can it refer to recording tape in general, or even sellotape?

  6. Just saw からするに instead of からすると, can’t find this usage anywhere online, can somebody explain why it’s に instead of と
