  1. It’s cuz it’s the new vacation option for poor people in America. Moo-moos, obesity crocs, Karen attitudes and all.

A trip to Japan costs less than Disney World now so they’re all coming here pretending it’s Disney World.

  2. Largely due to yen weakness and by pratice, worsen off inflation of the locals…

    >From January to March 2025, about a year ago, visitors from China spent 547.8 billion yen in Japan, accounting for roughly one quarter of the total and ranking overwhelmingly first. However, due to a request by the Chinese government to refrain from traveling to Japan, this year the figure dropped to 271.5 billion yen, a decrease of 50.4%.

    >Meanwhile, spending from Taiwan increased by 22.5% from 317.1 billion yen last year, South Korea rose by 12.7% from 282.3 billion yen, and the United States grew by 16.6% from 222.3 billion yen. In addition, many countries saw significant increases in spending, including Thailand (+18.9%), Vietnam (+71.3%), Germany (+59.6%), and the United Kingdom (+46.9%). These gains compensated for the decline from China, resulting in an overall year-on-year increase of 2.5%.

If the decrease in Chinese group tourists is offset by an increase in Korean and Taiwanese visitors, then it’s ultimately a relative shift, but I think that’s a positive development. Even for Chinese visitors, individual travelers are better for Japan than group tours. Group tourists tend to create too much friction in tourist areas.

  4. Unfortunately. I am tired of tourists who have no idea how to use onsen (especially the really nasty ones completely bypassing the pre onsen shower). I am tired of tourists that smell like shit. I am tired of tourists that can’t wait in line properly. I am tired of tourists that can’t stfu on trains and lounge on seats and swing on handles. I am tired of tourists who complain that the Japanese don’t speak English. I am tired of tourists that refuse to follow local customs. “but but but Japanese people do these things too!!” Okay? It’s their country, who cares.

    I am tired of tourists.

  5. Idk what its usually like but I spotted a lot of indians and other southeast asians there.

  6. After Korea and Taiwan being the top 2 countries of origin, America and The UK come next.

Americans seem to romanticize Japan a lot. Of course, there’s also those White men who have yellow fever and visit Japan as passport bro and sex tourism.

  7. M A D N E S S

I see majority of white tourists though at any given conbini. Chinese tourists spend pretty well in nice restaurants, and also buy a lot of luxury goods, so kind of good for business

  8. Not really surprising. Japan is attractive to all tiers of travelers, from budget to luxury. Some other countries are like that to a degree, but with one important factor usually missing: safety. You can “slum” in Japan without any appreciable difference in the safety factor. You could be a backpacker with a limit budget staying in hostels or a comfortably retired executive staying at 5 star hotels and your experience, as far as safety, is going to be roughly the same.

I just came back from Mexico City and you can have a very safe but *curated* experience there. But you’re on a rail, from Roma Norte, La Condesa, to Polanco, and not straying very far away from Reforma Ave within certain sections. Otherwise, you might have a very bad time. Culinarily, very similar to Tokyo in that all the bests from Mexico gather there, but a very different experience otherwise.

And for the some (most?) of the rest of the country? Forget about it.

In my experience, the only other metropolitan area with the similar safety level is Seoul.

  9. Japan is like China except the economy is actually bad, so people from America can come here with not a lot of money and feel pretty rich. The only expensive part about a Japan vacation is the flight lol.

  10. I have my ticket since august of last year. People buy their tickets in advance. It will have an impact in a few months when people would buy tickets if it does at all
