I’ve had a bit of a tradition for the past 10 years of going to Bikkuri Donkey on my birthday. It’s always been kind of a comfort thing for me. The same place, same vibe, something to look forward to every year. Reminded me of the kind of places my family and I would go for my birthday in the US as a kid.
But I went this year and honestly… it felt completely different.
There were hardly any staff around, and most of the experience was handled through a tablet and one of those serving robots. I get why that’s happening, but it really changed the atmosphere. It used to feel a bit warm and unique, and now it felt kind… empty?
They also got rid of the big wooden menu, which I know sounds small, but that was part of the charm for me.
The bigger disappointment though was the food. Portions felt smaller, and it just didn’t taste as good as I remember. On top of that, they no longer have the fried ika side dish, which was something I always ordered alongside the fries which had smaller portions. I use to get the organic beer which tasted good. I don’t drink anymore but I’m sure that changed.
I know things change, especially with the economy and labor shortages, but it was kind of sad to see a place I’ve been going to for a decade feel like a completely different experience. I even went last year with my wife, and it wasn’t this bad. This was definitely a recent thing.
I’m thinking this might have been my last time going.
Has anyone else noticed similar changes there or at their favorite other chains recently?
