For the Kansai part of our trip we were thinking to stay in Osaka – none of the sights we read about there set our world on fire except the castle, but it sounds like a fun city to be in. So we were thinking to use it as a base for the region.
Something like:
* Arrive from Kanazawa the night before
* 1 day Osaka
* 1 day Nara
* 1 day Kyoto
* 1 day Himeji
* 1 day spare – in all realty we’ll probably go back to Kyoto for another day but who knows once we are there
* Then head to Ise-Shima
Osaka seems like a good base transport-wise, cheaper accommodation, and good eating/drinking if we get back from our day trips early enough.
But wondering if we would be missing out on staying at a traditional old hotel in Kyoto and wandering the historic streets at night? I know some of this is “it depends on you”, but we’ll have had a historic ryokan in the Alps around Nagano, so I guess I’m asking for people’s opinions on Kyoto as a day trip or two vs adding an extra move in our itinerary.
Budget isn’t super constrained so we could just stay in Kyoto instead of Osaka but it seems silly to pay a premium to stay there and visit other places, and it’s a little less well connected.
Thanks for any perspectives!
