American ALT applicant here. I got Alternate 2 years in a row and I'm not sure what more I could have done to get shortlisted this year.
For the 2025 cycle, I already had 5 years experience living and teaching ESL abroad, experience learning a foreign language to a high level, and made sure to give examples of connections I'd made along the way in my SOP. I also had been doing part time work with an online international platform for English learners for practicing English and cultural exchange.
Last year I had the flu during the interview which negatively affected my performance I imagine. I also didn't feel like I got many questions that really gave me an opportunity to shine or fail, just mostly middle of the road and I got selected for Alternate. So, I worked very hard to significantly improve my profile for this cycle and try to work in details this year during the interview that showed improvement from last year.
I went from teaching ESL online to all ages+substitute teaching to teaching MS full time (on an emergency cert, not yet fully certified)
I logged over 1000 hours of serious Japanese study through 2025 (mentioned in my SOP to show serious commitment (still working on it a lot this year), and improved my performance on the Japanese speaking portion of the interview.
I was also very prepared for the interview this time around (and not being sick probably helped as well) knowing more or less what to expect thanks to experience from last year. I'm generally quite personable and don't really get nervous in interviews. The panel seemed to respond quite positively to my answers and I felt like I made a pretty good impression. I also had a question for the panel for something I was genuinely interested in about living and working as a JET ALT, which they seemed to appreciate.
Despite all this, I still only got Alternate again. I'm not sure what more I could have done to be a better candidate for the JET Program, but I suspect I may just be very mistaken about what they're looking for. I've wanted to spend some time living and working in Japan (not vacation) for 10 years now, but I'm honestly not sure if it's worth putting my life in limbo again for another full year when I'm not sure there's anything more I can do to improve my profile with them. I know I could probably get in with a dispatch company or Eikaiwa, but I'm not sure that's a financially sound decision and honestly, JET really aligned with my career goals (also expressed this during my interview).
Am I just mistaken or am I missing something major and just don't know it?
