Looking for the “Real” Japan: 5 days between Tokyo and Osaka (July 12-17). Completely open to overhauling to avoid crowds!

Hi everyone,

I am planning a 5-day leg of a larger, 1-month trip to Japan. This specific loop will take place from July 12th to July 17th, afterwards I will go to Tokyo and Osaka area.

My absolute priority for these 5 days is to experience the authentic, rural, or coastal Japan, away from the overwhelming crowds of Western mass tourism. I want to see beautiful, genuine places, slow down the pace, and experience local culture. For example, I am completely skipping places like Hakone because I want to avoid overcrowded tourist traps.

I will be traveling strictly by public transport (no car rental).

I put together a blueprint centered around Fujikawaguchiko, Shizuoka, and the Izu Peninsula. However, I am COMPLETELY OPEN TO OVERHAULING IT OR CHANGING THE ROUTE ENTIRELY if you don't like it or if you have better suggestions for an authentic, crowd-free experience.

Here is the current plan:

* July 12: Land at Haneda (20:00). Head into Tokyo just to sleep near Shinjuku or Shinagawa.

* July 13: Tokyo -> Fujikawaguchiko. Plan: Take the Fuji Excursion train or Express Bus. Leave bags, head to Oishi Park for the lavender festival, and enjoy the lake views. (Night in Fujikawaguchiko).

* July 14: Fujikawaguchiko -> Shizuoka City. Plan: Visit Chureito Pagoda early in the morning, then take the Fujikyu Bus south to Mishima, and a train to Shizuoka City. Afternoon at Nihondaira Terrace and Kunozan Toshogu. (Night in Shizuoka).

* July 15: Shizuoka -> Fujinomiya. Plan: Day trip to Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, Shiraito Falls, and a short taxi to Obuchi Sasaba tea plantations. Return to Shizuoka. (Night in Shizuoka).

* July 16: Shizuoka -> Shuzenji Onsen (Izu Peninsula). Plan: Train to Mishima, then the local Izuhakone line to Shuzenji. Walk around the historic village and through the Bamboo Forest Path (Chikurin no Komichi). Night in a traditional Ryokan.

* July 17: Shuzenji -> Move towards Tokyo for the next part of my trip.

My questions for you:

  1. Does this Shizuoka/Izu blueprint actually feel authentic and crowd-free in mid-July, or will places like Kawaguchiko/Chureito feel just as packed as Kyoto?

  2. Is the Bamboo Forest Path in Shuzenji worth the detour, or is there a better, more hidden traditional spot along this route that feels like "old Japan"?

  3. If you could completely rewrite these 5 days to find the ultimate "hidden gem" or authentic region accessible by train/bus, where would you send me?

I am completely open to your critiques, hidden gem recommendations, and total itinerary overhauls.

Thank you so much!
