Safe staying in 8 Chome (Shinjuku) ?

I am traveling to Japan for the first time with some friends and we are staying 4 nights in Shinjuku, 8 Chome area at an Airbnb. Has anyone had any bad experiences staying this area? I hear a lot about the African tout scammers and but heard that was mostly in Kabukicho.

Personally i don’t have issues staying in seedier areas but my buddies could be more adverse to that experience. Do you recommend that we rebook or should be ok? We have common sense to not talk to these scammers but just wanted to see if people had any adverse experiences staying in 8 Chome.

Any advice helps thank you!!

  1. Stayed there numerous times. Zero issues.

Generally stay at Bellustar at the center of it.
    Again zero issues.

Don’t follow anyone anywhere. And you’ll be fine.

  2. Seedy in Japan is not the same seedy in Chicago or New York. I wouldn’t worry so much. Just pay attention.

  3. Shinjuku 8-chome is quite far from Shinjuku station itself. Depending where you are located in the neighborhood, it can be at least 20 mins walk….. The closest station is Nishi-Shinjuku, not super practical.
