Is it true that Ueno is dead at night?

It's going to be my (25F) family's first time in Japan this early June and I suggested that we stay in Ueno as our base since I read about all the good reviews about it.

However, my mom (56F) watched a YouTube video stating that we shouldn't stay in Ueno because it's dead at night, so she now wants to stay in Shinjuku. For context, we live in a somewhat rural area in Asia so I guess my mom wants something different from the usual quiet.

However, I'm afraid that Shinjuku as a base will overwhelm us with the crowd and the big train station. Shibuya is also too expensive for us.

What are your thoughts on this?

Edit: My mom most likely want to stay out until 12am, and we're staying in Tokyo for 7d6n!
