  1. I have a wicked canker sore on the top left side of my mouth right where my gums meet my cheek and it hurts so damn bad. It hurts to smile even.

  2. The clinic near my house had to shut down because the doctor got ill. She was young too, in her late 30s/early 40s and it was her dream to open my a family clinic. Sad.

  3. Tax bill came today for vehicles and property.

Figuring out how to schedule maintenance and user shaken on my bike. I have one free maintenance left and I think they can check the light adjustment, but I can’t immediately take it to the shaken place on the same day, presumably. I’m not sure how long the alignment would stay true enough (all of this being an hour each way) Generally annoying to schedule it all and I get to take a day off work for the privilege.

Another first-world problem: several things I use (e.g. GeoGuessr) have streaks reset at midnight UTC. If I do something before 9am JST one day but not the next, I lose the streak.

  4. Sigh.

Just got back from a 10 day, no break international business trip. Was supposed to ride out the rest of the week off to recoup my in lieu days…

Except massive report for monthly meeting looms, so it’s either Overtime fun all next week or bite the bullet and go into the office today. And it’s raining.

Bollocks, guess I’m going to work

  5. Wife was in the hospital for a week. Very stressful. Had to take care of our two kids while going to work etc all without a car (long story short I can’t really drive). Since I go to several schools, I told one school I may be a bit late in the morning due to having to take care of my kids by myself and then biking to work. But apparently I forgot to tell the other school the same thing, so when I didn’t show up to work at precisely the time, they immediately called my office, who then called me. I received the call as I was coming in the door of the building, 1 minute after my work time was supposed to start.

Like I’m not even saying it’s not my fault that I was late, or that I forgot to tell them, but who TF calls within less than a minute. Even the principal at my other school was like: eh if you’re late within 5 minutes don’t bother calling, so I didn’t think much of it. God some people are just insufferable.

I asked on the phone if they want me to take nenji for the one minute. Couldn’t help myself. Like when I walk in the door 5-10 minutes early on most days no one gives a fuck but if you’re one minute late suddenly people have to be called. gimme a break.

Also wife’s back now and I’m getting a cold.

    Great.

  6. Just yesterday, someone I’ve been having nice small talk and slightly deeper conversations with here on Reddit suddenly said they didn’t want to talk with me ever again because they thought I used an LLM to write a reply to them and couldn’t be swayed otherwise.

Not a close friend, by any means, but it was still such a slap in the face. I hate non-transparent use of AI with a passion and I don’t have the emotional bandwidth to try to defend my use of “m-dashes,” which I’ve been writing with since high school. I just hate that online friendships require such high levels of suspicion and lack of trust these days.

On the one hand, it’s a blessing to have a way to keep in touch and meet new people outside of Japan, but it’s also severely limiting and has really dumb risks involved I never imagined having to deal with. 🤦‍♂️

  7. Woke up this morning to a Charlie horse, thankfully despite it being quite a big one, it ended fairly quickly, but still. My legs are already still store and toes blistered from a hike over the weekend, so I guess I’ll just struggle to walk again today

  8. The other day I went to mall toilet to pee. Somebody shat on a fucking urinal. Nope, not peeing there. Fucking disgusting.
Also, the cleaners’ misery, Jesus Christ.

  9. Went to a stadium event and after it ended they staggered the seating blocks to avoid a rush of people all at once, but also opened only 1 exit from the entire stadium area so all 60,000 people were funneled into 1 path. A 10 minute walk from stadium to the station took over 1 hour and a lot of those people didn’t even need the station but were funneled there anyway.

  10. city hall asked my company if we can help with international kids adjusting to life in Japan. I was already kind of doubtful that we would have anything to contribute given that, but then it turns out that what they’re doing is basically separating the international kids from the Japanese kids and giving them training on “how to be more Japanese” so they don’t get bullied in school.

I did like 10 minutes of skimming through research papers on the subject, and everything points to that being a bad idea, with only negatives for the kids in the long-run, both in terms of successfully “assimilating” and in their academic progress.

will probably put a dent in our relationship with the city by telling them that their plan is poorly-researched besides being, you know, stupid and racist, but *somebody* needs to think of the children.

  11. I used to laugh at coworkers who use excel for every type of document they want to make.

Caught myself making a presentation document in a spreadsheet the other day becasue im so used to it out of habit.

You really do die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

  12. Work. OH and how the AC is still not on in the office. The windows and doors are open but the rain has made it way more humid so it feels like I’m breathing in fucking soup. I can’t with the stupidity.

  13. I had a nasty bicycle accident and have been in the hospital for a week. I missed seeing Deftones because of it. Hurts more than the accident.

I’m now part cyborg though. Which is kind of nice.

  14. Right behinde my house on the other side of the park there was an area designated as 資材置き場 for some Chinese people who keep shouting something in Chinese 24/7 while unloading debris and other waste there…

  15. Apparently I have a habit of looking of wanting in the climbing gym that are about to be reset, and then I have to try and scramble to try and find a belayer. Why is this so hard?

Yes, this is my very serious complaint.

  16. My days off are Thursdays and Fridays and every time I plan to go on a wee adventure for at least the past two months, the weather sucks.

  17. I bought some gifts for my friend when i went to NYC for a business trip. A bagel from Liberty bagel, cause she loves bagel and she’s a queer, a magnet from MoMA cause she said she loves modern art. Not fancy, but I thought I did my best based on my salary and the exchange rate.

She looked like pretty cold when i passed the stuffs to her. and even asked me whether the magnet is from Japan, cause she saw a MoMA around in Tokyo.

My dear friend, that’s a MoMA store, the MoMA is the Museum of Modern Art, I thought you know that cause you’ve talked a great deal about modern art. The stupid stores are all over the world but the Museum is the only one.

I didnt say this to her face though.

However, I saw her ins story 3 days later, she posted some other gifts from her other friends, writing how much she loved the gifts, how much appreciation she felt, blablabla

But no posts for my gifts at all. Usually I dont care whether my friends posting stuffs about me, but this time, its so obvious that she’s not happy with me.

I started to think whether i am a annoying person, has a awful personality. But I cannot remember anything that i behaved badly.

Maybe it’s just time to move on and make new friends, but omg this is so hard cause i dont drink, i never went to bars, i live in a small circle, i rather rest fully on the weekends than going out and having fun…

  18. Received another rejection from a decent PhD program. Ego thoroughly bruised. Currently don’t have hot water. Money is super tight right now. Bedroom light just went out. Please excuse me while I yeet myself into a hole.

  19. With all the inflation and whatever I think my supermarket has just given up with bentos and premade food. 90% of it is deep fried slop that doesn’t even get sold with heavy discounts by closing time. One of the vendors inside the supermarket also shut down recently.

  20. JFC, Japan Post banking.

Go to do an online furikomi, which I haven’t done for years. Get to the end. “You need to use your token for a security number”. Oooh shit. The token is a literally physical fob thing that looks like a mini calculator. It’s at home. Can’t do it.

“You can also install the authenticator app”. I thought this would be like Google/Microsoft authentification apps, like a 30s limited code. Noooooo. This shitty app is basically a wrapper for the website. I sign up. You can only do furikomi through this “app” now. Can’t do it on the website.

    Okay. Do that.

Sorry, you need to prove your ID. Okay, upload that.

Sorry, you must wait 3 days to use this service. Not “It may take up to 3 days to check your details”. Just “You must wait 3 days to use this service.”

Okay, cancel this shit. Just let me do it on the website.

You cannot do that any more. You can only use the app.

But the “app” is literally a front end that then opens the Yucho bank website in safari.

    Sorry, you cannot do that.

End up doing it at the ATM.

Banking in Japan in 2026. Yeah, I know people will tell me that other banks do it better, but those banks are STILL shit. It’s like, “Sure better than fucking awful is better, but none of this is good”
