Dumb observation about Hyouketsu “Mottainai”

I was channeling my younger days in Japan and drinking a can of sugary alcohol in the bath, and I took a look at the label.

So why *is* it called “mottainai”? Are they using some sort of low-waste, energy-conserving process?

No. It’s that the 0.2% juice content is made from fruit that was too unattractive for consumers.

That is to say “juice fruits.” Ugly fruits were always going to be made into juice and other products, so there’s literally nothing special happening here.

I’m not a big believer in marketing, and I bought it because it tastes nice and has a pretty can, but this feels cynical in the extreme.
