Hi! I couldn’t find many recent posts about actually living in a maisonette in Tokyo, so I wanted to ask for thoughts/experiences from people who’ve done it.
I’m deciding between: 40sqm maisonette vs 29sqm 1DK
The maisonette unit I’m considering:
- spans the 1st and 2nd floors (there’s another maisonette above it)
- has large windows on both floors
- high ceilings + large ceiling fan
- 2 AC units (one on each floor)
- floor heating
- bathroom + bedroom on the 2nd floor
What I’m especially curious about:
- electricity costs
- how manageable temperatures are during summer/winter
- how air circulation works between floors
- whether the vertical layout becomes annoying over time
- whether having the bathroom upstairs is convenient or inconvenient
- whether the spacious/open feeling stays worth it long-term
I really love the character and openness of the maisonette, but I’m worried it might be excessively more difficult and expensive compared to the 1DK.
Would appreciate any real experiences, regrets, unexpected pros/cons, or things I should watch out for before committing to a 2-year lease. Thank you!
