Hi all,
We're in Okinawa during this typhoon and we had a trip planned to zamami during the mentioned dates above. Unfortunately, our hotel contacted us and strongly suggested to cancel our stay in zamami island since we wouldn't be able to get a ferry back to naha… Any ideas what to expect during this typhoon?? Our plan was to do Tokashiki 27-29, then direct ferry to zamami on 29th, and back to naha on 1st June. Would it make sense to wait the storm out in zamami? Is it possible to do anything on one of the islands during a typhoon? Or is it better to avoid it and go back to naha ASAP before ferry cancellations start? Anyone had any typhoon experience on the island?
Thanks in advance!

It’s going to be really hard for anyone to give you an answer with any certainty. It doesn’t look like a terrible typhoon right now, and there’s a real possibility that it curves early and misses us completely, but it’s a gamble either way.
Personally I don’t think it will hit very hard, and you could likely wait it out in Zamami, but the seas will probably be too choppy to come back on the 1st and maybe the 2nd.
However the uncertainty factor is real and there is a chance that it could get worse and not turn at all and run straight over us. I don’t think safety will be an issue but you could be stuck with nothing to do which would be pretty miserable for what should be a nice vacation.
If you have the flexibility I might consider hopping down to Ishigaki for a couple hundred bucks per ticket and not really having to worry about it
As per the other comment, it is too early to tell. However if it does hit you are not doing anything other than shelter in place during the typhoon. Get some snacks and supplies and there is a possibility the power will go out. Some hotels get generators after the storm, smaller places or airbnb may be blacked out for a while.
Definitely don’t go to Zamami next week
does anyone here have thoughts on my situation by chance?
Currently traveling japan and I’m planning to fly out of fukuoka airport on the 30th to Oki
Can i expect that flight to be canceled and or be concerned with my flight to tokyo on june 3rd?
I lived in Kadena for a few years. I’d go to Naha asap and wait. You’ll need to take shelter.
Oh damn i fly out of okinawa back to the US on June 1
I remember all the debris in the water. Swimming was banned. Trees snapped.
