In the Pacific theater, the war was still in full swing in May 1945. On the night of May 25, American B-29 bombers carried out a massive bombardment of Tokyo. Large parts of the Japanese capital, including areas around the Imperial Palace, were reduced to ashes by incendiary bombs.
