Living on a Student Visa + Remote Work

Canadian here. I’ve been wanting to spend 1-2 years in Japan and have been weighing my options considering how strict the barriers for entry are. Unfortunately I turned 31 this year and so working holiday visa is no longer an option for me, although it is for my husband for another year and a half.

I currently work remote for a digital marketing company – it’s very easy work, I’m essentially paid to do next to nothing for 40 hrs a week. I’m also a successful Twitch streamer as a second remote income. Together, my two remote jobs are shy of meeting the income requirement for digital nomad, so that’s out.

My only option seems to be a student visa, and I would absolutely appreciate the experience of enrolling in a language school and spending a year or two studying the Japanese language. However, I see there is a 28 hr a week limit on working. My remote job has such a low workload (maybe 30 min to 1 hour of work for an 8 hr shift) so it would not interfere with my studies at all, but I understand I would have to in order to remain compliant.

What about Twitch, though? Since I’d already be at the 28 hr cap with my digital marketing job would I be breaking the law by streaming, even if I have adequate free time and enjoy it? Just trying to understand how this would be treated is since I’m paid by my subscriber count on any given month and not an hourly wage.
