Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Japan and I’m trying to understand the visa situation of my girlfriend (Myanmar national), and what realistic long-term options we have.
She is currently staying in Japan under a “Designated Activities” status (Tokutei Katsudo) based on emergency/humanitarian circumstances. Her residence status is valid for 1 year.
For context, I have also been living in Japan for around 3 years. I have previously applied for asylum and have been staying under a “Designated Activities (Tokutei Katsudo)” status as well. My residence permits have mostly been 6-month renewals.
We are trying to figure out:
How people in similar Myanmar humanitarian status situations managed to extend from 1 year to 3 or 5 years
What factors immigration actually considers for extensions (job, tax, employer, income, etc.)
Whether switching to a work visa (especially care worker / Kaigo field) is the most realistic path
If anyone has successfully moved from this status to a more stable long-term visa (or even PR later on)
Whether having a sponsor (employer or partner) realistically helps in this specific status
We are also trying to plan long-term stability in Japan, so any real experiences or advice would be highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
