What are some common characteristics of Japanese people’s English?

English isn’t my first language but I’ve always found it fascinating so I’m constantly looking for ways to improve. That’s why I’m curious about what recurring traits people notice in the English that Japanese people tend to speak.

Like I said, I’m not a native speaker myself but one impression I’ve had is that even when their English level seems fairly limited, a lot of Japanese people still speak with quite a bit of confidence and aren’t too afraid of making mistakes.

At the same time, I’ve also noticed that they don’t always seem familiar with idioms or expressions like “tongue in cheek” or “like water off a duck’s back.” It almost feels like that kind of colloquial language isn’t emphasized much in school.

What other patterns or characteristics have people noticed in Japanese people’s English?
