Moving to Japan soon, ethernet/internet/PC questions?

Hello, I’m moving to Japan in about two months. I was curious how internet works in most apartments there? I’ll be living in a city. I have a homemade PC that’s pretty nice, but it can only access the internet through an ethernet cable (i do not have wifi connectivity). Do most apartments there have ethernet outlets? Can I buy/install an ethernet adaptor type of thing? If I bought a wifi adaptor for my PC, would the connection be fast enough for moderately competitive gaming? Does anyone have experience with this stuff? I built my PC, but I’m still not super tech savvy. Thanks!

  1. It depends on the apartment, but I lived in 4 apartments over the years and every apartment that I have lived in only had an ethernet outlet, no wifi. You had to use your own wifi router. But, in all but one place, the internet was shit since it was shared between the residents. At once place, during peak hours, you could barely even watch videos. This was all the internet that came with the apartment, of course, there were options to pay for my own internet separately.

  2. Depends on where you live. Some apartments come with an ethernet port for free, albeit crappy, internet service. For better internet, the place will need to be equipped with a fiberoptic socket/line and you will need a fiberoptic modem and router.

  3. So the important thing you’ll have to wrap your head around is that you’re not going to plug your computer directly into the internet.

The path your computer takes to the internet will depend on your internet service provider (ISP).

In my apartment, the building has signed an agreement with an ISP and we have a large circuit coming into a wiring closet on the ground floor. The circuit is connected to an intermediate device which then has a single cable connected to an entrance point in each and every apartment in the building. From that entrance point, I have an additional device which effectively splits that cable and runs to every room in my apartment. I find this connection is good enough for my needs.

If your apartment does not come with internet already (or if you decide you don’t want to use building shared internet) you will need to contact an ISP and sign your own contract. Then you’ll have options (or maybe not). There will be ISP’s who give you a box that connects to their network wirelessly. There will be ISP’s who give you a box that connects to their network using telephone wires. There will be ISP’s who give you a box that connects to their network using cable TV wires. There will be ISP’s who don’t want to use those mechanisms and will instead want to install their own special cable (and will give you a box that this cable connects to). How you connect your computer to the box that the ISP provides you is entirely up to you. You may choose to use cables, you may choose to go wireless. The world is your oyster.

I’ll give you this link here which hopefully answers more of your questions:[https://www.sakuramobile.jp/internet-japan/nuro-hikari/](https://www.sakuramobile.jp/internet-japan/nuro-hikari/)

  4. Note many sharehouses are 1 big apt of 2-3 residents with the router in the kitchen. So you wouldn’t be able to run a cable to your room.
