How much can you memorize and what’s the best way to do it?

Hello I’m about to start genki 2. Each chapter has about 20 kanji and 50 words. I hope to memorize that in 2 weeks so I can cover a chapter every week or so with an Italki teacher. But I also have another course to go through which has 20 kanji and 30 words in a lesson. I plan to do this every week. I’ve been using flashcards to remember everything so far but am not sure on the best approach.

Is it possible to memorize that much for someone with bad memory? 70 items every 2 weeks + 50 items every week. Is it better to do a set amount of words and kanji a day, Or to go through a lot of words and kanji in a short time then keep reviewing them for a longer period than you would if you just learnt approx a dozen a day?

  1. Nobody here has any insight into your memory specifically, but ~12 new cards/day is an average amount that I think most people can handle long term. I would add them at a constant daily rate to an SRS like Anki, which should create ~30 min of work every day.

I would also study ahead a little bit, for example start with the Genki 2 vocab now, but don’t start doing the lessons with your teacher until you reach the vocab for say chapter 3 or 4. This way you will a) know the vocab better at the time you do the lessons and b) give yourself some room in case you need to slow down later.

Edit: [Here](https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/969261095) is a good Anki deck you can use for Genki 2.

  2. I’ve learn the same way.

Every week, I had the kanji and voc of 1 lesson in Anki.
And one month after, when I’m sure I know all the flash cards, I learn the lesson.
In the same time, I add 10 flashcards per day for the JLPT.
So, I’m learning around 150 cards per week, and it’s hard to hold. When you start to feel upset by the amount of cards you have to review, don’t add cards during one week. Just make your review and you will be ok.
