How to make a futon bed softer

Hi there, I just bought an authentic Japanese futon bed from Takaokaya, but I find it a little hard when I put it on the wooden floor.

I just want a bit more cushion and softness, what can I do? Does putting a thicker tatami mat made from natural materials help?

  1. That’s a tough one. It’s kinda something you have to get used to especially if you have been sleeping on a regular mattress your whole life.

Futon is usually for tatami but even that is hard if the futon itself isn’t very high quality but it sounds like you may have bought a decent futon.

I used to double up my futons or put a spare comforter on top of the futon and sleeping on that. A thick mattress pad under the futon may help.

Watch out for mold if you don’t air out your futon regularly, especially if you just leave it on the wood floor.

I think there are also tatami bed frames that you can get to at least help with air circulation but doesn’t really help with softness.

Look up 畳ベッドフレーム if you are in Japan.

After doing the futon life for 3 years I gave it up and went back to sleeping on a bed, lol. Never going back.

  2. Trying to do things the Japanese way is part of the Japan experience. But why suffer with bad sleep?

I just buy memory foam mattresses. You can get them on Amazon or other online stores.

  3. My body needed about six weeks to really get used to sleeping on my futon on the floor. Initially I put a thick blanket on top of the futon to help a little, but it was definitely really uncomfortable in the beginning and I was getting pain in my back and hips, and waking up really stiff.

After getting used to it, though, I wouldn’t ever want to go back to a normal mattress/bed as my back pain in general has gotten a LOT better and I hardly ever wake up with acute back or hip pain anymore (was a regular occurence before the futon).

  4. remenber that futon needs to air’ed or it will keep humidity and it will get stain etc … tatami helps a bit because there a frame and space to the real floor. you must fold it every day and air it outside in the sun from time to time
