Pillow Recommendation? With Free Trial.

I’m on my quest to find a really nice pillow regardless of price because I want to retire the one I bought from Tokyu Hands ages ago (a half-soft/memory foam pillow) and it’s losing its shape and support due to age and I want something really really comfortable.

I’m looking at ones that have a free trial so I don’t waste money on something that I don’t like. It’s also kinda hard to tell if you like a pillow just by trying them in-store.

Pillows I’ve tried in-store but didn’t like:

1. Ikea
2. Muji
3. Nitori
4. Tempur

So far I’ve tried and purchased and re-sold/returned. I’ve returned most of these because they’re too stiff/hot when in use.

1. Magniflex – pillow grande
2. Ikea – Klubbsporre
3. Koala – Refresh Pillow
4. Ecosa – Ecosa Pillow (currently in use, will return soon)

I’m also planning on trying Panda next. Any other recommendations?

Just out of interest, were you this willing to spend (what I still can’t help but think are) crazy amounts on pillows *before* you came to Japan?

I don’t mean it in a condescending way. I’ve found myself accepting that I cannot even get a decent pillow for less than about 2,000 yen when back in the UK I was perfectly fine with one that cost the equivalent of less than 1,000 yen.

Feels as though Japan’s obsession with having a senmonten (and the resulting crazy priced SKUs) for practically everything has defeated me after all.

  2. I bought a nice pillow made in Denmark, think you can find them in Labi. Synth down that’s really cooling and not too soft. Phosflakes I think.

  3. So, I’ve never tried it, but in Yokohama I often walk by a store called じぶんまくら, where they consult with you and I think even scan your body to make a custom pillow. I believe it’s a 90 day return policy.

  4. Nitori has a million types of pillows, and I can see you tried them in store and dismissed them, but I really like the Hotel style series. I sleep on my side/stomach, so I like a flatter pillow with some give. It’s just right for me. Good luck with your quest.

  5. My head doesn’t even consistently make it to the pillow. Pillow or no pillow I sleep the same. I had no idea people could be this picky about them TIL.

I do like the reading pillows with the armrests and back support though!

  6. Ok my ultimate reco is a soba pillow which you can buy from Amazon. I don’t remember how much it was, something between 3-5k.

I hate soft pillows and I’ve tried more expensive pillows but the soba pillow is my favorite. I even bought a mini soba pillow for travel because I liked my regular soba pillow so much.

    Soba pillow ftw!!!
