Hello,
For context I’m 18M living in japan for almost a decade years now. I moved here when I was 8 with my parents because my dad got a position here. Then I started going to an international school.
During corona, my dad lost his job. After that some shit went down, his “friend” ended up cheating him out of their business and a lot of cash. We had to go through all his savings and he and my mom had to work part time to get by as a family of 4.
Now it’s time for me to start applying to colleges. My parents’ plan always was to send me abroad to the US or UK to pursue higher education and settle there.
But right now, especially considering our current situation, I feel its best to study at a Japanese university for the time being. I plan to study Mechatronics engineering or Computer Science at a bachelor’s level, and possibly pursuing a masters if I’m permitted, here or abroad. After that I plan to go abroad to work.
But my parents still think about going abroad. They still want me to go to the US/UK/Aus and take out a massive loan to pay for my education, and then slowly pay that off. This is something I feel would be a bad idea or not even permitted considering I’m an international student. I myself cannot ask them for any money because of the situation they’re in, it would be putting them in more struggle. So I’d be pretty much on my own wherever I plan to go, working part time to get by.
Am I in the wrong here? Should I bite the bullet and go abroad anyway possible, is my plan even feasible?
