Question for DoD civilians

I will be moving to Okinawa soon (2-ish months) and only was just informed of this 3 weeks ago. I have pets which I am going to take with us but they will still have quarantine time when this happens. Short of using a shipper, is there a way to ensure that we come into Naha so our pets can finish the quarantine time in Oki and not via Narita/Haneda ? Right now the plan is for my spouse to stay behind and use a shipper to help him but if we could get everyone together at the same time it would be less costly.

Thanks

  1. Recommend you post your questions to Facebook Okinawa Questions group. There are a lot of military and GS in that group.

  2. From my research when we brought our cat the answer is No.

Pets can do their quarantine on base, or they can do it in the Haneda/Narita quarantine, or they can do it outside of japan. Those are the three options.

I really don’t know what happens when you arrive in Haneda and tell them they will be watching your dog for the next four months of quarantine though…

  3. There’s a very informative Facebook page called “Flying Pets Japan” that might be able to help you figure this out. Good luck!

  4. It’s completely different for SOFA folks and you can get away with a ton of you tell the Japan quarantine folks that you’ll be “living on base”. They will let you do an “on base quarantine”. I personally did this when bringing my cat back to Okinawa from California after properly doing the rabies tests/vaccines and then missing some stamp on a form somewhere. Honestly the process is just a tad ridiculous.

It seems like you need to do all this stuff and prepare for 6-7 months in advance, and that’s what it certainly says in writing.

In actuality, it doesn’t have to be like that.
