Moving to Okinawa and looking for the best neighborhoods

As the title states I’ll be moving to Okinawa and working on Camp Foster. I’d like to live in an area where I can walk for restaurants, coffee and izakaya’s or bars.

What are the best areas to live with these things in mind and how would the commute be from your suggested areas to and from camp foster?

  1. Yomitan area and American Village would be the best two choices, depending on you what you prefer (beach and nature in Yomitan but American Village has more bars and shops, and is closer to Camp Foster)

  2. The Koza area is great for live music, clubs, tons of izakaya and even has Gate 2 street for if you really want to let loose, USAF style.
It’s a bit rundown though, I’d prefer nearer Arahata Beach/Chatan area, beautiful sunsets, America Village, Koza, and Foster nearby

  3. Really depends on what type of experience you want. Sunabe/American Village area is going to have a lot of the touristy and American bars and restaurants. Definitely walkable, and there are some really good places. Super close to Camp Foster.

If you don’t mind a little more of a commute, Toya/Sobe area has some awesome low key bars, restaurants, and coffee shops with in walking distance. It is a little less Americanized but you are still super close to Torii Station (Army base) which has a terrific gym and a really nice beach.

I know some people live in Okinawa City, but I didn’t go out too much there.

  4. I’m not american, the military is a huge part of okinawa income, so around bases things are made for military personnel and tourists.
Truly japanese izakaya and night life you’ll find in Naha.
Outside of Naha most neighborhoods have a small izakaya or two in walking distance but not a ton.
I’d suggest you to try to live near one of the monorail stations.
