We are planning to take the ferry to one of the nearby islands, which one should we go to? Or are there two good ones that are must see ones that we should allocate two days to?
I did scuba dive around Ie. The east China Sea has hundreds of great diving spots.
If you only have a day, do zamami the only one where you can travel to in decent time and back by using the express ferry.
It’s really nice with beautiful beaches
We did an overnight in Tokashiki, it was a short ferry ride, beaches had “star sand” water was super clear. Bring snacks since food options are limited. We noticed all the fences between homes were made of bleached coral, it was super cute and beautiful.
Iheya has a cool 150 yearish old pine tree and beautiful reefs. But it is far for one day.
The only Islands that can done. Reasonably experienced in a day. Trip via boat are the keramas, Minna and Ie.
Boat schedules for the other Islands essentially make day trips impossible or extremely short like 1 hour on island.
Minna is super tiny and cool but in the off season which we are in everything is closed and unless you bring your own food and water it will really suck to be there for several hours.
I’ve never been to Ie because I’ve never seen a reason to go, versus all the other places to explore in the prefecture.
keramas are great but very touristy, and the cost of going there for a day is annoying when compared to plane tickets around the region.
Tokashiki was a great time. We rented scooters and rode up and down the island going to various snorkeling spots. Ie was cool but it was a lot of sugar cane a nice cafe and the love cave
My personal favorite was Ie, I’m a history nerd and was ecstatic to visit the Ernie Pyle memorial near the site of his death
Tonaki, but you’ll have to stay overnight.
One of the Kerama Islands if you like nature and beaches. But if you’re gonna be here in April, Ie island has a nice Lily festival in April and May. I suggest looking up islands that are having a festival or some event, those are always fun to see!
I recommend Zamami. Rent a moped (approx 4000-5000 yen). There are three places that rent them, closely clustered to each other. Head to Ino beach. Snorkel if the water is warm enough. Stay the evening if you can. Watch sunset from one of the lookouts. There might be a baseball game happening in early evening at the field. Eat dinner at Kafushido, make friends with the chef/server – he’s great!
